OZ BOSS Results Round 1

Round One of the 2006 Oz BOSS Championship has been run and won at country Victoria's Winton Motor Raceway, in very wet conditions.

New South Welshman Ty Hanger, in his Pluim Interiors Reynard 95D Formula 4000, took out the overall honours for the weekend - putting in impeccable performances in the trying conditions.

Hanger took pole position in the Saturday afternoon qualifying session, ahead of Derek Pingel in his ALMG Reynard 95D F4000, followed closely by Ben Crighton, Terry Clearihan, Alan Price, Sam Dale and Matthew Fox. All competitors driving Formula 4000 machines.

Sunday morning brought heavy rain, and all competitors were on wet tyres for the rolling start of Race One. It was a tentative first few laps, with visibility an issue, and grip virtually non-existent.

Hanger built an early lead, and held it strongly all the way to the flag. Behind him, a number of competitors suffered from the slippery conditions, with a number of spins throughout the race.

Ben Crighton held on to take second place, followed by Alan Price, Derek Pingel, Sam Dale, Matthew Fox and Terry Clearihan.

Just before the start of Race Two, the sky was broken, and the sun was peeking through. There had been intermittent showers in the hours preceding the race, and the track was somewhere in between wet and dry. Two competitors took a gamble and ran on slick tyres - Ben Crighton and Sam Dale.

The track was still quite wet at the standing start, and Team Sydney driver Alan Price was lefted stranded on the grid while the pack slithered away. He managed a restart and set off in pursuit of the field.

Ty Hanger was again out in front, while the two cars on slick tyres found the going a little precarious. Around half race distance, Derek Pingel and Ben Crighton had a coming together, and forced the deployment of the safety car. This bunched the field up, and resulted in a sprint to the line in the semi-drying conditions. The track was still damp enough for wets, and not dry enough to make the most of slicks.

Alan Price pulled off a miraculous recovery to come through in second, behind Hanger, and ahead of Clearihan, Dale, Fox and Crighton.

Ty Hanger took the overall honours for the meeting, ahead of Alan Price, Ben Crighton, Sam Dale, Terry Clearihan, Matthew Fox and Derek Pingel.

Round Two of the Oz BOSS Championship will take place at Queensland Raceway, 3-4 June.
